Elections 2026: ICLEI Executive Committee Elections 2027-2030

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability is the leading network of local and regional governments led by local leaders elected by its Members every three years. Each ICLEI region elects their own ICLEI Regional Executive Committee (RexCom), followed by elections for the ICLEI Global Executive Committee (GexCom).

Dear ICLEI Members,

In 2026, we are calling upon you to join us in the ICLEI governance elections and, in doing so, to ensure that our network and organization further excels in advancing sustainability strategies and programs, locally and globally.

ICLEI is an association governed by its Members, and the elected ICLEI Regional and Global Executive Committees (RexComs and GexCom) represent key change agents in driving local and global action. The elections of the ICLEI governance bodies are organized through a global democratic process, spanning more than 100 countries and occurring at various periods in time.
The call for candidates and subsequent voting by ICLEI Members kicked off online from May 2026 onwards in all world regions where ICLEI has Members (RexCom elections) and will conclude with elections for global positions (GexCom election) at the end of the regional election processes. Positions in the ICLEI governance bodies have a 3 year term that begins at the ICLEI World Congress in October 2027.
All Members are encouraged to participate in this electoral process, by voting and standing for election. Be sure to participate and choose the candidates that should represent and lead the organization towards the ICLEI 5 pathways of sustainable development, local action and global impact!
Taking an active part in ICLEI’s governance is a fantastic opportunity for any committed local government leader to represent their city, town or region and be the voice of local and regional governments on a multitude of platforms.
We look forward to seeing the next generation of forward thinking, enthusiastic local-regional leaders step forward in the upcoming call for candidates – of all genders and backgrounds – to form a strong, diverse and committed ICLEI Council for the 2027-2030 term.

Each ICLEI region will follow a different timeline for the election of the RexCom.

 

The call for candidates for the GexCom portfolios is also open until 12 February, 2027. More information is available here.

How to vote: All elections will take place during 2026 at different times.

  • What is the election process?

    Parallel RexCom elections are rolled out in all nine ICLEI regions. Candidates apply in their region by submitting the application within the deadline to the respective ICLEI Regional Office.

    Eligible ICLEI Members vote online to elect three or five RexCom members, depending on the region. Every full ICLEI Member has the right to vote once on candidates in their respective regions.

    Once elected, each RexCom nominates one representative for the GexCom regional seat. Additional GexCom thematic portfolio candidacies are open for a vote that follows.

    All ICLEI Regional Executive Committees will be elected by the end of 2026. Specific dates and deadlines for the candidates and voting will vary depending on the region – see calendar above.

  • What is the ICLEI Governance structure?

    The nine ICLEI Regional Executive Committees represent ICLEI Members throughout the nine ICLEI regions. The single ICLEI Global Executive Committee represents ICLEI Members on the global level to define ICLEI strategy and policy.

    These governance bodies have a three-year term, and elections take place on this cycle, involving all ICLEI Members.

    All eligible candidates from ICLEI Members are invited to apply and all ICLEI full Members are encouraged to vote.

  • Who is eligible to vote?

    All full ICLEI Members are eligible to vote to elect their respective RexCom. Full ICLEI Members are due-paying Members that have not been in arrears with membership dues for more than one year.

    Suspended ICLEI Members – Members in arrears – can contact their ICLEI Regional Office to pay their membership fees and update their status to full ICLEI Member.

    GexCom portfolio holders will be elected by members of the ICLEI Council.

  • Who is eligible to apply?

    All candidates should be elected or appointed officials from a full ICLEI Member, up to date with the payment of their annual fee. Candidates should have know-how and interest in one of the proposed thematic portfolios.

    All ICLEI RexCom and GexCom members  must uphold ICLEI’s mission, its values and code of conduct, as well as fulfill the roles and responsibilities of the Regional Executive Committe and Global Executive Committee. ICLEI RexCom and GexCom members are expected to attend the annual ICLEI Global Executive Committee and the triennial Council meetings, both of which will take place at the ICLEI World Congress in Pohang, Republic of Korea, from 12 to 15 October, 2027.
